This is my grandmother, Ruth Roberts, who was 2 years old when this Christmas photo was taken in about 1898. She was living with her parents, Frank and May Gulick, at 159 1/2 Orchard Street in Elmira, New York. At the time, her father was working as a grocer on Lake Street. Her grandmother, Hannah Beaumont Roberts, was from England, and family stories have hinted that she did up Christmas quite well. Perhaps that influenced her son? This is one of my favorite photos, and in its original condition, was very worn out (see below). But after having it restored, I used it to make Christmas postcards more than 10 years ago.
